Strategic visibility for associates: how to be seen without self-promoting

One of the biggest challenges I see high-performing associates face is getting noticed without feeling like they’re bragging. You know the feeling: you’re working harder than anyone else, delivering excellent results, but somehow, your contributions remain under the radar. It’s frustrating. You think, “If only they knew what I was doing!”

Here’s the truth: visibility isn’t about loud self-promotion—it’s about strategic presence.

Why Visibility Matters

In law firms, promotions and assignments aren’t just about the quality of your work—they’re about who knows your work exists. I’ve coached a number of attorneys who are brilliant but overlooked because their contributions aren’t visible to decision-makers.

Strategic visibility ensures that the right people know your capabilities, your wins, and your potential—without you feeling like you’re constantly patting yourself on the back.

How to Build Strategic Visibility

  1. Document and share wins subtly: Instead of broadcasting every achievement, integrate updates into status emails, team meetings, or client reports. For example, a well-crafted weekly email to your supervising partner that highlights progress can showcase your contributions without sounding boastful.

  2. Volunteer for high-impact tasks: Seek assignments that matter to decision-makers. Delivering great work where it counts naturally increases your visibility.

  3. Ask for feedback publicly: Asking for input or advice in meetings not only helps you improve but also signals to others that you’re engaged, capable, and proactive.

  4. Leverage cross-team interactions: Build relationships across practice groups and departments. Being known beyond your immediate team expands your sphere of influence.

  5. Champion others: Highlighting colleagues’ contributions creates reciprocity and positions you as a collaborative leader, which in turn increases recognition of your own work.

My Personal Take

Early in my career, I learned the hard way that just working hard wasn’t enough. I had to create touchpoints with the right people, consistently and authentically. That meant sharing progress updates, volunteering for strategic projects, and building relationships—not in a self-serving way, but in a value-adding way. Once I embraced this approach, opportunities flowed naturally.

Being visible doesn’t mean being the loudest person in the room. It means being intentionally present, so that your work speaks for itself while decision-makers are aware of your impact.

If you’re ready to increase your visibility strategically—without feeling like you’re self-promoting—let’s create a plan that highlights your strengths, builds your influence, and positions you for the opportunities you deserve.
